Understanding Fiber

Fiber is a type of carbohydrate your body does not fully digest. It supports digestion and fullness.

Beans, lentils, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds are good sources.

Increase fiber gradually and drink fluids along with it.

Some USDA records do not report fiber; this site shows that as unavailable instead of zero.

Practical examples

  • Swap white bread for whole wheat bread.
  • Add chia or flax seeds to oats.
Educational use only: Nutrition values come from USDA FoodData Central and describe the specific preparation listed; recipe and meal totals are calculated estimates, not laboratory-tested values. This tool does not set calorie targets and is not individualized medical or nutrition advice. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or take medication, talk with a licensed healthcare provider or registered dietitian.
