Reading Nutrition Labels

The Nutrition Facts label helps you compare foods quickly.

Start with the serving size; all numbers on the label refer to it.

Look at calories, protein, total carbohydrate (including fiber and added sugars) and total fat.

%Daily Value shows how much a serving contributes to a 2,000-calorie reference diet; 5% or less is low and 20% or more is high.

Practical examples

  • If you eat two servings, double every number on the label.

Knowledge check

What should you check first on a label?
Educational use only: Nutrition values come from USDA FoodData Central and describe the specific preparation listed; recipe and meal totals are calculated estimates, not laboratory-tested values. This tool does not set calorie targets and is not individualized medical or nutrition advice. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or take medication, talk with a licensed healthcare provider or registered dietitian.
